Search Trends

Fun fact: Only three states broke the BDSM most searched kink.

Delaware and New Jersey searched most for swinging, while New York searched most for face sitting.

Methodology

We compared all 50 states across four indicators of sexual activity, access and online curiosity. Raw values were adjusted for population where appropriate so larger states did not automatically rank higher. Each indicator was then converted to a percentile rank from 0 to 100, showing how a state performed relative to the other states in this study. Those percentile ranks were multiplied by the weights below and added together to produce the overall Kink Score. A higher score indicates a stronger combined result across the four measures, rather than a literal measure of an individual resident’s preferences.

35%

Adult store density

Adult stores per 1 million adults. Locations came from OpenStreetMap entries tagged shop=erotic. Records without usable state markers were checked and assigned using Nominatim reverse geocoding.

25%

Sex frequency

Average self-reported sex frequency per week by state, based on NapLab survey data. This is a survey-based measure and may reflect sampling and reporting differences between states.

20%

NSFW searches

Not Safe for Work content search demand per 1,000 people, using state-level estimates from Google Keyword Planner. Search activity reflects interest, not necessarily behaviour.

20%

Kink searches

Google Keyword Planner demand for a curated list of 20 kink-related categories, calculated per 10,000 people. The same seed list and comparison method were applied to every state.

Interpretation and limitations: Percentile scoring is relative, so a state’s score depends on the other states in the dataset and should not be read as an absolute measure of “kinkiness.” OpenStreetMap is community-contributed and may undercount businesses, particularly in rural areas. NapLab figures are self-reported. Google Keyword Planner provides estimated search demand, and the curated kink list does not represent every sexual interest. Results reflect the data available in May 2026 and are intended as a light-hearted comparison.
