Methodology

The study compares all 50 states using four indicators of sexual activity, adult-oriented access, and kink-related online interest.

How the score was built

  • Adult-store counts come from OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API, using locations tagged as shop=erotic. Missing state markers were assigned via Nominatim reverse geocoding.
  • Average sex frequency comes from the NapLab Sex Survey, based on state-level self-reported data.
  • NSFW content and kink search volumes come from Google Keyword Planner, normalized per population.
  • Each metric was converted to a percentile rank so states could be compared on the same scale, then combined into a final Kink Score.
  • The top kink data reflects a curated seed list and should not be read as a universal representation of all preferences.
